Ganga Taranga is a ritual offering to Lord Shiva. The dance begins by the entry on stage (manch pravesh), followed by a flower offering (pushpanjali), respect to the earth (bhumi pranam), a hymn (sloka) and a salutation (pranam) to God, the Teacher and the Audience. Composed by Maharshi Vyasa, the hymn says: His matted locks are adorned by the flowing waves of the Ganges, his left side is constantly decorated by the presence of Parvati, he who is dear to Narayana and the vanquisher of kamadeva’s pride- worship him, the lord of Varanasi.
